You Thought the Death of Abba Kyari Guaranteed a Better Nigeria Right?

When Abba Kyari passed on, the kind of jubilation from several corners of our country reminded me of 1998 when General Sani Abacha died and I am wondering till this moment if Nigeria ever got better because Abba Kyari died. Worst things have happened in Nigeria since his death; there have been decisions he wasn’t a part of like School children been fed from home with billions of Naira, at #FIRS, illegal terminations and appointments etc. Well as far as I know, the dead have nothing to do with the living thus the current list of inexhaustive ills are habits we tend to have adopted for managing our country. Despite these ills, the pertinent questions we need to provide sincere answers to are:

• DO WE SINCERELY WANT NIGERIA TO BE BETTER?
• WILL HOW NIGERIA IS MANAGED GUARANTEE A BETTER NATION?

In #literature, Prof Effiong Uwatt many years ago introduced us; his students to the concept of microcosm which I today interpret as smaller versions of an entire whole. By that I mean, in our families, small and big #business, #church, #mosque, #shrine, we have our little Nigeria and the way we have handled things at such levels have to a great extent determined how the country, Nigeria has become today. One can also say that the way we continue to handle our little Nigeria will determine how we will manage the #Nation should we be given an opportunity through Election in future. So, I implore most of us to first take responsibility for what our nation Nigeria is today.

In one of my reflective moments, I tried to think about times when I ever did anything well and was proud of the success we achieved and many came vividly strong but the most appealing was when I worked with #Chuji Olinze and some members of the supply chain team at the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria #IHVN. Having being made head of the department, Chuji scheduled the first meeting with an agenda different from any I had ever attended in my life at that time. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss first the #Vision, #Mission and #Objective of the #department in line with IHVN’s overall goal. Following the achievements of our vision, mission and objective statements, after several #brainstormings, we proceeded to list out all #bottlenecks capable of mitigating the achievement of the objectives and I think we came up with more than 100 listed for such a small department but we also penned down suggested solutions to each of those bottlenecks for those we could resolve within the department.

Next, we proceeded to make a list of everything we needed, when we needed them, person’s responsible for tasks and key performance indicators #KPIs we would constantly use to measure our progress and bingo we set to work. Before I met Chuji, I had never seen any supply chain that did not have issues like #Stockouts on certain commodities and one of our goals was to achieve Zero Stockout within the organisation since #top-management had pledged commitment to always ensure that stocks needed for patient management would always be in full supply.

We got to work, I was in charge of KPI management and several other tasks and I can tell you categorically with reports if you choose to probe that we achieved 97% percents of our objectives and top on the list was Zero stock out for 3 years before members of our formidable supply chain team at that time left for other organisations.

The main reason responsible for our #success, #growth in our small Nigeria was first because we were clear concerning what we wanted — A Great Supply Chain Unit that would be #benchmarked against global standards at that time. Because we all wanted that, irrespective of our #qualification, #experience, #gender, #tribes, #social-status and other differences we brainstormed and achieved what we achieved and every member of that team have embedded in their #CVs same success story because they made contributions however small.

The current problem in Nigeria is worse than the COVID — 19 #Pandemic and I initially thought that the Pandemic will make all humans like me sober and provide us with an opportunity to #reflect on life and ask personal questions like, if Nigeria was handed down to me in this manner, would I like it?

Abba Kyari had nothing to do with the current underdevelopment in Nigeria. His death rather made me draw a comparison between him and Mandela who also died old but was celebrated by several country presidents notably for his contributions in enabling a system that favoured development in South Africa.

Can we not build a better Nigeria for God’s sake? I believe we can but we need to go back to our Mission and Vision #Boards, we need to get buy-ins from different stakeholders within our country, then, we need to create #systems and put in place KPIs that would enable us to measure results we achieve against our goals.

I still believe in a #greatNigeria otherwise I won’t be writing about us anymore. Let us today begin again to think about how best to salvage our nation.
