Whatever Worthy is Required for Progress, DO IT
Many years ago, I worked in an organisation where Nepotism thrived when there were vacancies that needed to be filled.
You could be certain for instance that if an Igbo man was in charge of the organisation, the appointment would be given to one from his tribe if he had the right CV irrespective of who was most competent for the position.
For a while, that was the practice until obvious inefficiencies started showing up within the system impacting the organisation's productivity. Management tried to resolve the challenges via training but impact assessment after 6 months didn’t reveal any significant progress.
After a management retreat, the board decided to hire new staff and agreed among themselves that only the best would be hired otherwise, the great ship would sink and they would all drown with it.
I had never been impressed with that management at that time who for the sake of progress decided to shun nepotism, tribalism and aim straight for talents and qualities that will grow their business.
Many of us including me have tried to grow our business with the wrong calibre of people. We have sometimes hired friends, relations and all sorts and still wonder like me why progress is not happening at a rapid rate.
Nigeria my dear country is also bedevilled by this kind of issue; we have not thrived as a country because even in elections, we look at the monies that have been given to us or consider the sweetest lies before we go the ballot boxes to elect leaders that are not passionate about greatness.
We elect people that can only serve the interests of their friends and their villages not even local government and later complain that things are not working right.
Progress is possible, it only requires a switch in mindset; get the right people into the right places and even use them to train and improve the incompetent people who are willing to improve.
That is how great systems can be built, it is how great countries can be built, it is how visions can be achieved.
I have started fixing my issues too. When will you begin? When can we begin to fix Nigeria?
Shalom.
