THE ACCEPTANCE CURRENCY

There have been times, I woke up early in the morning to make it early to work and just when I got in the car to drive off, I realised my car has got a flat tyre. (Mood Spoiler😔)

Occasionally, after I have had a very busy day at work and only looked forward to going home to shower and sleep off, I get a phone call from my wife, saying “Beee, please come home quickly oh, we need to take this guy to the hospital, he has been heating up since morning” (Check that on your attitude 😩).

Imagine after rehearsing for about 6 hours during the week with a vibrant choir that looked forward to some awesome worship and great song rendition in church. Suddenly, a Roman Catholic Priest that belonged to the Vatican 1 council, steps up the altar and says, today the mass will be recited (Joy killing 😊)

Imagine you applied to study Law over 4 years to several universities but was never granted admission even if you felt that you qualified. (This may feel strange to a lot of you reading but it happens in Nigeria). What are you going to do? Accept what you have been given to study or refuse to go to college or university because you haven’t been handed what you want.

Several Motivational talks have told us that we can become whatever we want to become, do whatever we want to do, and often fail to remind us of many other things beyond our control.

There are several occurrences in our lives we cannot control:

  • We cannot choose when our car tyres get flat
  • We do not determine when the kids fall ill
  • We do not control when we fall asleep and wake up
  • We are unable to determine when we live and die
  • We are not usually in charge when we lose certain cases in court
  • We sometimes do not know why we lose and win deals etc.

Rather than complaints, confrontations, or clamming up, which we would do when we don’t agree with certain things, I wish we would learn to sometimes accept the things we cannot change.

For me, the first part of the Serenity Prayer will never get old; “LORD GRANT ME THE SERENITY TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I CANNOT CHANGE.

Shalom!
