MAN LIKE HENRY…
There is a guy called Henry in our business, Jewel Publishers.
I met Henry years ago after he completed his apprenticeship in graphics design and was recommended by a friend when I was in dire need of a stable graphics designer to work with us.
He was the kind of person I needed even though his graphics skills at that time were immature for the media services we wanted to offer our clients.
Considering that, we were also mindful of overheads, I didn’t realise when I started asking him to do things that were outside the scope of his work. He was employed then to work as a graphics designer, but as we progressed gradually, Henry learned how to cost for printing and publishing works better than most accountants we have engaged to date.
He became a professional at managing operations during production and interfacing with clients, advising them on the best ways to handle different kinds of work they gave to Jewel Publishers.
At some point in our journey, I was a bit scared that we had put our company Jewel Publishers, in one man’s hand, and I was afraid. Sometimes, I am still scared that he knows too much to lead to our demise if he decides to move on to something else.
I know that the arm of flesh could fail, but I realised a few months ago that the things I exposed Henry to have also made him so loyal to Jewel Publishers and me.
He knows the things he knows because he said more Yes to me most of the time than No. Henry does not know what impossible means. At those times, I simply said, I want this, and my guy goes about it, and within deadlines, I would have answers staring at me on my desk.
I didn’t have explanations for my methods, but this morning, while reading the leadership book from Robin Sharma, I understood why Henry sticks around me as a good wife Married to her husband in good and bad times. Robin said, “By helping your people become so good at what they do, they become indispensable, you will not only boost productivity, you will gain loyalty”.
HENRY IS AN INDISPENSABLE PART OF JEWEL PUBLISHERS. HE IS THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED AT JEWELS TO DATE.
