KEEP AN EYES ON THE FUTURE— Your Children are that Future

In the good old days, Sundays were family time for most homes. By 6 pm, children and adults alike had their eyes glued to the television to watch “Tales by Moonlight,” a programme that aired sweet stories imparting moral lessons to everyone watching. By 9 pm, everyone eagerly anticipated the news anchored by Frank Olize, who often began by asking parents about the whereabouts of their children.

While we didn’t stay up to watch the programme, my dad and mum would, at that time, call all our names to ensure everyone was in the house and in bed, as there would be school the next day.

This weekend brought back memories of those days when parents had more time for their children because I watched a very touching movie on Netflix titled “Colours of Evil Red.”

Following the death of her daughter in the movie, Helena had this to say about her daughter:

“When Monika was 14, she went to a camp and was different when she came back. She wouldn’t talk about it. She went into some kind of depression but managed to pull herself together. After some time, she started dressing differently and partying a lot. Her grades were good, so I didn’t worry about it. Now I can’t help but feel I missed something, that someone might have sexually abused her at the camp.”

Perhaps this message has no business here, but I understand how tough life is currently in Nigeria and the urge to focus on earning a living. While we do that, may we not forget to keep an eye on our children, knowing that whatever we have made may not make much sense if we lose them.

Blessed week, everyone. Try and watch the movie.

Shalom
